APONYE (U) Limited is a Nominee for the 2019 Uganda Responsible Investment Award (URI Award) slated for 22nd November 2019 during a High Level Uganda Responsible Investment Summit and Award Ceremony. The 2019 Uganda Responsible Investment Summit and Award Ceremony is organised by Public Opinions and Office of the Minister of State for Privatisation and Investment.
Aponye (U) Ltd is a registered private Company since 1989 and is involved in buying and selling of produce, agro processing, and manufacturing in the domestic and regional markets as well as cargo transportation. Every season, the company buys Maize, Beans, Soya Beans and Sorghum from farmers. It’s cleaning and drying facilities are currently based at Nalukolongo in Kampala district, Kyazanga in Lwengo district and Mubende district.
Aponye (U) Ltd has a fleet of 50 trucks with a tracking system which ferry produce from upcountry buying centers. Each year the Company handles over 100,000 MT of grain which is sold in the domestic and regional markets.
Aponye (U) Ltd has put in place a competent team of 80 members of staff that manages the day to day operations of its business. These are supervised by a competent Chairman who has over 32 years’ experience in the business.
Company Overview
In the year 2000 the company leased three trucks from then Uganda Leasing Company which finance lease was well serviced.
The other financiers at the time were Nile Bank and Uganda Cooperative Bank that financed the operations of the company.
In 2001 the company joined Dfcu Bank which has facilitated our trade up to date through providing us with different products ranging from deposits, contract financing, asset financing through leasing, letter of credit, import loans agriculture loans, guarantee and overdraft facilities,
In 2003 the company got shortlisted as one of the suppliers of World Food Programme this has given the Company a big competitive advantage over the other players in the field.
In 2004 the company also joined Stanbic Bank Uganda Limited because of its financing needs and it also provided the same products as Dfcu Bank up to date.
Aponye (U) Ltd has storage capacity of over 30,000MT at any given time while its cleaning and drying plants have a capacity of 300 MT per day Aponye (U) Ltd generally buys produce from all parts of the country to enable it meet demands from its large buyers.
In 2005 the Company acquired land in Nalukolongo where the first processing plant was set up; on the same land is the manufacturing machinery of Maize Flour, Oil & Soap that has diversified the Aponye (U) Ltd from predominant grain buying and selling to agro processing.
In 2010 the Company leased the processing plant in Kyazanga from Official Government Liquidator which it recently acquired.
In 2013 the Company got financing from Uganda Development Bank Limited in its bid to diversify its business and acquired the machinery for milling plant, oil refinery and soap making which it has since paid off.
In 2015 the company also acquired land in Mubende and put up another processing facility which has improved the company’s capacity to satisfy the existing market.
In 2015 the company got financing from East African Development Bank to finance the development of Mubende with partnership of Abi Trust as a donor.
We have since met all the conditions that were stipulated in our agreements with Abi Trust.
Services and products offered
The current services and products offered by the Company include:
Produce dealing and processing- the Company offers a wide range of products which include; white Maize Grain, Maize Flour, Beans, Sorghum, Soya Beans. Cooking Oil, Soap. Our Produce clientele include; World Food Programme, Ministry of Defence, Uganda Prisons, Office of the Prime Minister South Sudan and Rwanda.
Production of soap and cooking oil- the company has recently invested in factories that produce soap and cooking oil which is supplied locally and in the region
Cargo Transportation- Aponye (U) Ltd also provides cargo transportation. The Company has a fleet of over 50 incredibly well maintained trucks with highly experienced and professional drivers. Transportation is both local and across borders like Rwanda, Burundi, and Southern Sudan. The Transportation clientele include World Food Program, Ministry of Defence, Uganda Prisons, Tororo Cement Ltd, Rubya Investors Limited, Seroma Ltd and Red Cross.
Achievements made over the years
The company has managed to service its loans with a good record that it has maintained with its financiers.
Over the past years, the company has consistently progressed in produce buying and selling as well as provision of transport services under several contracts to both local and international organizations which include; UN- World Food Program, Red Cross International Akuku Farmers, Kam Suppliers & Contractors, Afro Kai Limited, Joseph Initiative among others.
In the recent years the company has worn several awards in recognition of its undisputed quality performance in the field of produce buying and selling, that is;
In 2015 the company won gold award as no. 1 in export of cereal sector from Uganda national export promotion board.
In 2008 the company won Gold award as No.1 in export of cereal Sector from Uganda National Export Promotion Board and 2007 the company also won Silver award as No.1 in export of Cereal Sector from Uganda National Export Promotion Board.
In 2007 the Company was also one of the most Compliant Tax payers and was awarded Ura vantage award in general trade sector.
In addition 2004, 2005 and 2006, the companies also won Silver Awards as N0.1 Exporter of Legumes from the Uganda National Export Promotions Board at the same event as above.
In 2003, the Company received a Certificate of Recognition from the Uganda National Export Promotions Board at the prestigious Presidential Export Awards.
