From Youth Leaders & Potential Future National Leaders to Self-Serving NRM Mobilizers: A Concerning Reality as We Mark International Youth Day- Buyinza Adam Luzindana
As we celebrate this year’s International Youth Day, I wish to point out a bitter fact: youth leaders who should be driving forces for progress have become mere NRM mobilizers and self-seekers. In Uganda, they were recently spotted in Soroti fighting for food and demanding transport refunds, with no clear position paper or strategy to engage the government.
The youth, who should be local, regional, and national leaders, are now mere NRM mobilizers for politicians in various parties.
Poverty has led some to become radical mobilizers, while others have resorted to illegal activities to survive. Female youth have turned to illegal businesses, and male youth are believed to be involved in uncultured activities.
Today’s youth leaders have done nothing for the youth fraternity, focusing instead on posturing and perpetuating tribalism and hatred. International Youth Day, celebrated annually on August 12, aims to bring youth issues to the international community’s attention and celebrate the potential of youth as partners in global society. However, Uganda’s youth are more interested in food and transport refunds.
I recall my tenure as Regional Chairman for the NRM Youth League in Kampala, where I dedicated myself to serving the youth, building their capacity, and creating opportunities for them to benefit from government programs. In contrast, current youth leaders are unknown or have done nothing for the youth.
I join the youth of Uganda in celebrating International Youth Day and call upon youth leaders to dedicate themselves to organizing and empowering youth in their communities. It’s unfortunate that youth are being recruited as mere NRM Mobilizers and Self-Seekers. I wish you a happy International Youth Day.
