With the leadership of H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and our political supervisor Dr Ruth Nankabirwa, Electricity Regulatory Authority has registered greater achievements in Power generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure which have continued to expand- Eng Ziria Waako stated.
Generation capacity increased to 1378.1 MW as at March 2023 from 1,343.9 MW in March 2022, an increase of 34.3 MW. With the commissioning of the Karuma Hydropower Project planned for September 2023, generation capacity will increase to 1978 MW. The 6 MW Nyagak III Hydropower project is also due for commissioning by end of this month.
In transmission, a total of 417 km of transmission lines were added to the main grid during the year, bringing the total transmission line network to 4,011 Km. To enable evacuation of power from the 600MW Karuma Hydropower project, the 248 km Karuma-Kawanda, the 55km KarumaOlwiyo, and the 76km Karuma-Lira lines have been completed.
761 km of transmission lines and associated power sub-stations is being constructed to improve the stability and reliability of the networks. Government is building the capacity of the Uganda Electricity Generation and Transmission companies to manage the generation and distribution networks after the expiry of the ESKOM and UMEME concessions.
Electricity Customer connections have grown from 1,552,025 to 2,000,000 Customers on the National Grid, representing a 7.9% growth. Also, 141,420 domestic customers are connected offgrid.
ERA has planted 60 (Sixty) Hectares of Tree cover in the catchment areas of rivers that host Hydropower Plants/Projects in Four (4) Regions, namely Northern, West Nile, Central, and Western Uganda. ERA Implements the project in partnership with the National Forest Authority.
Over 330.4 km of Transmission Network Length has been added to the grid, increasing the grid length from 3,430.9 Km to the current 4,142.56 Km.
Key projects included: Installation of a 50MW 132/33kV mobile power substation In Mbale to support the growing industrial demand and the Approved tariff investments towards increasing the capacity and quality of supply in Nkenda, Kawanda, Mutundwe, Mbarara, and Njeru, amounting to UGX 77,549,745,575.
