Building a global community
The actors and networks linked to the foundation represent a practical contribution to the building of a global community, our social capital These contacts span over more than 150 countries, even though French-speaking Europe represents half of the social capital of the foundation. They reflect the partenerships developed over the years with persons and insitutions sharing our values and concerns. They also reflect the careful attention of the foundation to dialogue with a great diversity of socioprofessional groups, ranging from militaries, to farmers, from academics to business executievs, from fishermen to political leaders.
The Charles Léopold Mayer Foundation for the Progress of Humankind (fph) is a foundation under Swiss law.
Established in 1982 by Madeleine Calame, executor for Charles Léopold Mayer, with the bequest of the latter, the foundation is supervised by the autority of the Canton de Vaud, Switzerland.
The foundation is committed to “finance -through donations or loans- researches and actions contributing in a significant and innovative way to the progress of humankind through science and social development“.
The Board of Trustees comprises seven to eleven members; currently we have eleven. The implementation of the strategy is ensured by an executive team of thirteen employees. The action is financed by the revenues of the bequest, allowing a stable budget of 10 million Swiss Francs per year.
Values
The foundation is part of the European humanist tradition. We believe in the possibility of a social and moral progress of human societies.
Our values:
- social, cultural and intellectual emancipation of individuals; the conscience of their dignity and rights;
- the development of their sense of individual and collective responsivbilities, towards their contemporaries and toward the future generations; the conscience of their duties;
- the development of their capacity of collective organization and action in economic, social and political fields; the conscience of their social nature;
- their fulfillment; the conscience of their legitimate aspiration to happiness.
Philosophy for action
Beyond the institutional aspect the foundation defines itself as a human adventure: our philosophy of action is the result of our experience over a long period of time, made of private and public partnerships worldwide. It is important for an institution like ours to integrate the lessons from past successes and failures to move forward.
The foundation also monitors the long term evolution of our societies. The global interdependences change the relationships between societies, individuals and between humanbeings and nature. In this context the foundation made the choice to contribute to the emergence of a global community capable of driving three major mutations:
- to conceive new forms of governance;
- to adopt common ethical principles;
- to implement the transition toward more sustainable societies.
