USAID began its assistance to Uganda immediately after its independence in 1962, recognizing the country’s potential as a “bread basket” of Africa, with its rich natural resources, and significant rural population. Priorities have evolved over the past five decades, and we remain committed to improving Ugandans’ livelihoods.
With three integrated development objectives—increasing resilience, addressing demographic drivers, and strengthening systems, USAID works in partnership with the people of Uganda to address the fundamental challenges constraining the country’s development.
DEMOCRACY, GOVERNANCE AND CONFLICT:USAID actively engages and collaborates with the Government of Uganda on activities to promote good governance, political competition and consensus building, civil society advocacy, conflict mitigation and reconciliation, and human rights in alignment with Uganda’s National Development Plan. Our program also assists in making the voices of marginalized people heard—particularly women and youth—and in shaping the role of civil society in governance. This inclusive approach ensures that citizens enjoy a participatory style of governing and that leaders also benefit from the views of their constituents.
ECONOMIC GROWTH: USAID works to reduce poverty and hunger in Uganda by fostering private and public investment in key growth sectors such as agriculture and energy, while supporting the sustainable use of Uganda’s natural resources. USAID is helping vulnerable people improve their resilience and nutritional status by participating in local and regional markets.
EDUCATION, YOUTH AND CHILD DEVELOPMENT: USAID’s commitment to Uganda focuses on improving people’s livelihoods. Strong economic growth has lowered poverty, reduced the rate of HIV/AIDS infections, and improved access to education, but challenges remain, such as a high school drop-out rate and low quality of education. A large number of children remain vulnerable to abuse, exploitation and violence; and the country’s youth face high unemployment rates when they finish school.
HEALTH AND HIV:The United States is the largest single donor providing health aid to Uganda. USAID’s health assistance in Uganda focuses on HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis (TB); malaria prevention and treatment; family health, which includes maternal and child health; family planning; nutrition; water and sanitation; emerging pandemic threats; and health systems strengthening.
HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE AND TRANSITIONS: The United States is the largest single donor of humanitarian assistance in Uganda, supporting emergency food and nutrition assistance, medical care, water, prevention of and response to gender-based violence, and livelihoods support to refugees and their neighboring communities.
